The challenge of the ultimate mountain
A staggering elevation of more than 1,900 metres will have to be surmounted to win the race starting in St. Niklaus at 1,085 metres above sea level, up to the world-famous resort of Zermatt (1,616 m.a.s.l.), and finishing on Riffelberg, towering 2,585 metres above sea level amidst 29 four-thousand-meter summits. An immensity of wild nature along this marathon course of 42.195 kilometres awaits discovery.

Training run on Sunday 17th June 2012. Zermatt to Riffelberg (with option upto Gornergrat)ome and join us this year and enjoy an unforgettable training day in the amazing mountainous surrounds of Zermatt. Together with our main sponsor, the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, we are organising a training run on this years refurbished Zermatt Marathon course on Sunday the 17th June 2012. Under the keen expert supervision of last year 7th placed Zermatt Marathon finisher (and the fastest ‘Upper Walliser’ mountain runner), Martin Schmid will supervise the training run along the actual Zermatt Marathon course (with the option onto Gornergrat). Kurt Scherrer, the Zermatt Marathon Manager and Andrea Schneider, the Zermatt Marathon Co-ordinator will also run to the Riffelberg in separate groups at a more leisurely pace. Free-ride on the race-weekendAll participants go on over the weekend, Friday, 6th July to Sunday, 8th July, for free on the following routes: Brig – Zermatt (MGBahn), St. Niklaus – Grächen (Postal), Zermatt – Gornergrat (GGB) and Zermatt – Sunnegga (Zermatt Mountain Funicular). On Friday (6th July) and Sunday (8th July) entitled the train ticket, which will receive all the participants together with the number bib, to free-ride on the above routes. Freude herrscht for every finisherFor every finisher, the Zermatt Marathon will donate CHF 1.- to the FREUDE HERRSCHT (Joy is in the air) Association. The FREUDE HERRSCHT Association, under the leadership of the Ex Swiss Federal Consul Adolf Ogi, wants children to be more active, experience nature, play sport, meet friends and build up same age relationships. |
