Press release Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon 2020

19th Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon cancelled

The management of the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon decided on 21 April 2020 to cancel the event of 4 July 2020. Due to the current situation and in particular in order to protect the health of all parties involved, implementation is not possible. This affects all courses of the GZM: half marathon, relay marathon, marathon and ultra-marathon. From an economic point of view, the event also faces a major challenge.

The management of the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon kept a last spark of hope, although the signs were already pointing to cancellation, and was still waiting for the Federal Council's decision of 17 April 2020. Although the Federal Council wants to loosen the prohibition on events in Switzerland from 8 June 2020, sporting events will remain prohibited for an uncertain period of time. Especially when it comes to big events, it is unlikely that they could take place before the end of July, as indicated by the Federal Office for Public Health (FOPH). The decision of the Federal Council, but mostly the responsibility of the organising committee towards all parties included – runners as well as volunteers and partners – to protect their health, finally persuaded the management to make a final decision.

The management of the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon very much regrets the cancellation, thanks all runners, sponsors, helpers and partners from the bottom of its heart for the lived solidarity, support and understanding and is already looking forward to the 19th edition of the race at the most beautiful mountain in the world on 3 July 2021. – Registration possible from August 15, 2020 ! –
